This Sunscreen Will Not Have You Emptying Your Bank Account – Gavia Sunblock Review

I finally found a sunscreen that's white cast free, broad spectrum and super affordable... YAAAY!!! Now let me tell you all about it...

I’m finally ready to share my experience with the Gavia Sunblock and Whitening Cream SPF 60.

So, we all agree that sun protection is very key right?

Yet, the struggles to find a sunscreen that checks the boxes can be quite daunting especially for brown skin people.

Well, I’ve been doing a ton of research trying to find an affordable sunscreen that’s white cast free and has the essential sunscreen ingredients.

I’ve had success with a couple and not so good stories with others but we’re not focusing on the negatives today.

The Gavia Sunblock and Whitening Cream with SPF 60 is the newest addition to my sunscreen stash.

I found it at my local superstore and decided to give it a trial.

I’ve been using this sunscreen for about 3 weeks and it’s safe to give a verdict.

So let’s get into it.

PRODUCT CLAIMS

The Gavia Sunblock & Whitening Cream SPF 60 claims to offer excellent sun protection, brightening and lightening effect and protection against radiation UVA and UVB.

It also claims to be non-greasy and non ashy with broad spectrum protection.

KEY SUNSCREEN AGENTS

🌞Zinc Oxide

🌞Octyl Methoxycinnamate

🌞Titanium Dioxide

OTHER KEY INGREDIENTS

🍉 Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A)

🍎Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3)

🍅 Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)

💦 Water

✨ Glycerin

The rest of the ingredients are emollients, thickening agents, plant based oils and preservatives (Hello Parabens!!)

PRICE

I got this for ₦1,150 at my local superstore. I’ve seen this at SPAR for ₦1,300 thereabouts.

You can also get it on Jumia and Konga.

MY THOUGHTS

So, the first thing that attracted me to this sunscreen was the price point because let’s face it sunscreen is expensive in Nigeria.

I read through the ingredients list because the price was to good to be true so I had to be sure it wasn’t some cheap ass product.

Alas, the ingredients checked the right boxes as well.

Pretty impressive Gavia!!!

So back to my thoughts, the Gavia Sunblock and Whitening Cream is a physical sunscreen (zinc &titanium dioxide) with a mix of a chemical sunscreen ingredient (Octyl Methoxycinnamate).

It offers broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays it is also SPF 60 and so it checks the boxes of an ideal sunscreen. It also contains moisturizing and brightening ingredients like Vitamin A and Glycerin.

The WHITENING on the label is simply a marketing term and nothing to be worried about.

Based on the ingredients list there brightening and lightening antioxidants but no bleaching agents.

So far I haven’t experienced any downsides.

It doesn’t leave a white cast and doesn’t require a lot of blending unlike the sunscreen from SEBAMED.

It DOES have a heavy texture and I think this is because of the numerous thickening agents it contains.

Now here are a few areas where I have issues with this product/brand.

According to the product claims, this sunscreen has Vitamin C and Dimethicone but I couldn’t find it on the ingredients list so that’s quite sketchy.

It also listed Squaline as one of the ingredients.

I was quite confused with the spelling because there’s SQUALANE and SQUALANE (both oils that are good for the skin) but I’ve never heard of SQUALINE so I’m guessing it’s a typo.

UPDATE – The brand reached out to me and clarified that the Squaline was actually a typo. Also the absence of Vitamin C and Dimethicone on the ingredients list is an omission error.

I’m taking their word for it.

There’s also a long list of thickening agents, emulsifiers and emollients. Which makes me wonder if they were trying to make a sunscreen or something else.

I personally feel like a product with too many ingredients might not be as effective as it claims.

I might be wrong though.

Finally, this sunscreen contains two different Parabens which are listed at the very bottom of the ingredients list.

Parabens are a type of preservative that have gotten a lot of backlash in the skincare industry because a study revealed that they were carcinogenic.

I personally used to avoid them in my body, hair and face products but skin chemists like Skinchemy have managed to convince me that they aren’t as bad as the media makes it seem plus preservatives are very important in skincare products so they don’t go bad.

However, if you’re strongly against parabens in skincare you might want to avoid this sunblock.

All in all I give this product a 4/5 mostly because it’s affordable, has great sunscreen ingredients and doesn’t leave a white cast.

All thoughts and views are my honest opinions.

Just because this sunscreen works for me doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll work for you.

Please know your skin type and what it can accommodate.

Always do a patch test and observe for a couple of days or weeks when trying out a new skincare product.

Until next time,
